I know office chairs. I've gone through half a dozen of them in a dozen years. I'm 300 LBS (give or take - probably take), 6'3" and have a hell of a hard time finding chairs that hold up and fit me. My last office chair lasted about four years (it still "works", but is falling apart) and I wanted a new one that didn't groan more than I did when I sat down or got up.

I spent, literally, weeks going over options and settled on this one for several reasons, but the biggest one is that it is 350 LB rated. It doesn't have the bells and whistles my old one had, but those were set once and forget kinds of features. I can do some creative mounting and have the same settings with this one. It also had the same kind of arms and in sitting, where my arms rest is important to my productivity level.

The packaging is about what you would expect - kind of beaten to hell. But it didn't have any loose parts inside, so even if you have gaping holes in the box, I expect nothing will have fallen out. I had about 35 minutes left on the movie I was watching when it arrived and I set to in getting it put together.

Overall I was EXTREMELY impressed by the weight of the steel that went into this chair. It's a quarter inch thick. Most chairs have creased metal that give rigidity to the part. This one does, to a small degree, but the main strength is in pure thick steel. I imagine you could tow an SUV with it. The base is chromed steel, and the pins on the wheels are also steel (though the wheels are not, but better wheels for office chairs are easy to get if they fail). They felt solid enough and went on the base tightly and firmly. The holes are welded into the base (a three point weld) that looked solid as well.

The padding is firm, but yielding, and a hell of a lot better than my old chair (where I had a blanket and two cushions augmenting the seat padding}. The leather may or may not be "real" leather. I'm assuming it's faux leather, though, or will likely wear through relatively quickly, but so was my five star old chair, so I'm not counting that against it. The adjustable arms are at least as firmly attached as my old ones and I had no complaints about them.

My only concerns are the wheel hole welds and where the pneumatic post attaches to the seat of the chair. I didn't see any reenforcing to either. It may not be as critical for the wheels (since they share the load) but the post connection is a potential trouble point. That's where I've ripped out other chairs in the past (Three of the six). The metal there is NOT the 1/4 inch metal in the seat and arms. It appears to be cast at about 1/8". Over time, that can buckle and break, not at the hole itself, but where the part in which the hole is situated is welded to the rest of the base.

For that reason alone, I took off a star and added the "so far" to the title of this review.

Assuming it holds my weight for the next for or five years, it will have been worth the cost (which was reasonable given the specifications), and I'd bump it up to five stars since four or five years is an excellent run for me. It depends on the strength of the steel and the weld. Only time will tell there.

As for the build, I was done (working alone) at about the time the end credits started rolling. It was simple to put together, assuming you bother to read the instructions and do it in the order shown with the right screws. The seat cushion width is very generous (about an inch and a half Wider than your average airline coach seat) and relatively comfortable. Lumbar support is a bit off (at least for me), but since that's not adjustable, I don't blame the chair. A separate cushion or support would work better anyhow.

My chair doesn't groan louder than I do. It fits where I need it to fit. Holds me up fairly well (once I add my usual modifications since I think it tips too far forward in the fully upright position - all chairs do for me so it's not unique), rolls well and seems to be well made. Durability may be an issue. Either way, I'll be back to update this review when the appropriate time comes, assuming this chair is even still sold by then.

Okay, I'm not happy anymore. And the appropriate time was not very long. The happiness lasted for only a few days before the drawbacks to the chair became patently obvious. First of all, the seat back is TOO upright. Maybe they expect petite people who can comfortably sit perfectly upright to be buying 350 lb-rated chairs. After a few hours, I feel like I'm being folded into a taco. With it being a fixed back chair (no reclining feature) this presents something of a problem. I've tried some creative spacing to get the thing to lean back, but there's more than just a lack of reclining.

The lumbar support is god-awful. My back is pretty straight. This thing is banging on my kidneys, pushing my spine forward without any way to reduce it. My back has never been sorer.

The tilt is WAY too far forward. I feel like I'm sitting on the back of a dump truck ready to be dropped into the trash. Again, I tried creative spacing to tilt the seat backwards, but there wasn't enough bolt to do it enough to make it worth while. It's still way too uncomfortable.

Yes, it reclines, but the adjustment is awful and it reclines TOO far. When I leave it on recline (instead of locking it into place), I "float" to find a more comfortable position. It's not a stable seat, though, which messes my back up even more. When it's locked, I can't get it to be comfortable.

My old chair was multi-adjustable, and I'm going to put it back into action. Having blown more than $200.00 on this one, especially after all the research I did, made me realize that taking chances on chairs isn't a good thing. I'll use what I can from this chair to improve my old chair (the base seems to be more robust on the new one than the old one) and some inventive metal work may let me swap out the backs (which was eroding on my old one) along with some kind of metal fixative to keep my old chair from losing its position (which is why I was replacing it) may be the answer. Or some reupholstering to get rid of that stupid lumbar support at the kidney level (which is NOT where the lumbar spine is). Or sell it on eBay and let the buyer pay the shipping. If it weren't for the lumbar support being in the wrong place (WAY too high), it might be okay. As it is now, I hate it.

It's big and heavy, but it's really uncomfortable for a big and heavy person.
