Lamy 2000 Fountain Pen, Black (L759) Review

Fountain pens made resurgence in the late 1980s and 90s after being eclipsed for decades by the cheap prices and easy of use of the utilitarian ball pens. Until the pen industry was sustained mainly by sales to collectors and old school traditionalists; only major manufacturers survived, mostly in Europe and a few in the USA, while many small companies faded away. The 1980s was the beginning of the era of displaying ostentatious wealth; extravagantly expensive wristwatches and "limited edition" pens became part of the bling phenomenon. Pens made of silver, gold or platinum and studded with diamonds, rubies and precious stones became symbols of success sought after by society's movers and shakers. Fountain pens became fashionable again, and established pen manufacturers and newcomers joined the resurrection of the industry by producing a variety of pens for every taste and budget.

The story of the Lamy Company begins in Heidelberg, Germany in 1930, when C. Josef Lamy, who up until then had worked as sales representative for the Parker Pen Company, set up his own business by purchasing the Orthos pen manufacturer, and renamed it the Orthos Fllfederhalter-Fabrik. It initially produced the Orthos and Artus pens that today are a collector's item. After 1948, the company name was changed to C. Josef Lamy GmbH.
Lamy pioneered the use of moulded plastics in pen production, used throughout the industry to this day. The birth of the Lamy brand and breakthrough on the market began, in 1952, with the introduction of the Lamy 27 with its innovative "Tintomatik" ink flow system; but it was the Lamy 2000, released in 1966, that propelled the company internationally.

The Lamy 2000, designed by Gerd Alfred Muller, was first produced in 1966 and continues to be made to the present day. It is the eponymous star fountain pen of the company. Like most Lamy brand pens, the 2000 elegant design follows the Bauhaus concept of "form follows function". The body is made of Makrolon, a hard fiberglass resin developed by Bayer. The section (where the pen is gripped) is of brushed metal. An integrated wrap-around transparent ring reveals the remaining ink level.
It is the only Lamy fountain pen to date that is piston filled and therefore only accepts bottled ink. The nib is "hooded" (mostly covered by the section allowing only the tip to protrude) and, unlike its less expensive brethren, it has a non-flexible 14-carat gold alloy nib plated with platinum, which allows it to glide over paper with smooth writing.
A commemorative version, celebrating the new millennium, called "Edition 2000" features an inversion of the original design; the body is stainless steel and the section is a ring of Makrolon.

I favor Noodler's ink especially with a fine or EF nib, although a thicker ink such as Pelikan or Quinck will flow well through a Medium or wider nib. European and US manufactured pens traditionally have wider nibs than Japanese and Asian products i.e. a western EF nib traces broader lines than an Eastern Fine nib.

The Lamy 2000 is a writer's pen and a collector's item at the relatively cheap price of MSRP around $150. It is securely comparable in the quality of its craftsmanship and elegance of design to fountain pens priced at more than ten fold. Many such pens are in fact jewelry to be exhibited and hardly, if ever used.

Veteran collectors, pen aficionados and industry insiders know that "Up to $150 you pay for the nib; anything above that you are paying for the sparkle!"
