I'm a grad student, and I really abuse my bags. On an average day I'm carrying my laptop, its charger, the 2 textbooks I use to teach, my own work (usually a legal pad and a sheaf of papers), plus whatever library books I've recently acquired. Because I got sick of buying cheap bags and having the shoulder straps fall off six months (tops) down the road, I decided to invest in something a little more expensive / a little sturdier. I also hate the clunky / ugly / giant space-age looking L.L. Bean-esque bags that are "feminine" because they have flowers on them and are pink, but that really just look like something a sixteen-year-old girl would use to carry her tuba to band camp. This bag seemed to be: a.) sturdy, and b.) pretty / professional, which means it fit what I was looking for, so I ordered it. And it is lovely. The leather is soft & of good quality. It is sturdily made, and after about 8 months of use, the only sign of wear it is showing is where I accidentally scratched it / scuffed the leather against a rough concrete wall (which made me sad). As other reviewers have commented, the padded laptop case that is meant to fit a 15-inch computer does not in fact fit a 15-inch computer. This did not bother me, however, as I have no desire to pry my laptop out of a padded computer diaper whenever I want to pull it out and use it--which is about every 10 minutes. My laptop fits nicely in the bag itself sans the bulky cover. My one real complaint is that if you are carrying any weight at all, the straps do not stay up on your shoulder. This is, I think, because they are so fricken long. They slide and droop and one strap falls off, and the next thing you know I'm stopped in the middle of a group of boisterous undergrads trying to finagle enough space to sling my bag up on my shoulder in a massive 2-foot arc. Then, 50 steps later, I'm doing it again. In the half-mile walk from where I’m forced to park to where I teach my first class, I217;m repeating this move (which I217;ve got down to a fine art) approximately 30 times, at least. I really do like this bag—it holds my stuff, it makes me look like an adult, it is not showing signs of an imminent demise. I thus expect to keep using it until it falls apart or until I win the lottery, whichever comes first. But when IR17;m carrying it around, I’m either: a.) waddling like a pregnant woman, trying to maintain the straps’ balance, b.) knocking out loitering frat kids who are too hungover to get out of the way when I swing my bag around, or c.) both.
