3M Porcelain Dry Erase Board, 48 x 36-Inches, Widescreen Aluminum Frame Review

Okay, I'm lazy, and I don't often write reviews for things I buy on Amazon (and I buy almost *everything* on Amazon these days). But this white board just cries out for a review. I *love* this board and want everyone to know how good it is.

First, it's a porcelain board. White boards can be made of several different materials: melamine, painted steel, glass, and a variety of others (some board descriptions don't even tell you what they're made of!). My recommendation is that if you want to use the white board on a regular basis, don't mess with anything less than a porcelain board. Most of the other types just don't erase very well (I don't know about glass). In particular, if you buy a melamine board, you will spend a lot of time trying to clean the board, and you will still get ghosting and smearing that is very hard to remove.

Also, many of the melamine boards are made with a fiberboard backing that can warp right off the wall (just read some of the reviews). And even if they don't warp, they are so flimsy that it's hard to write on them because they have too much give and don't present a firm surface. Trying to write on a bouncy board gets old real fast.

So, porcelain over steel was my minimum requirement, but I bought two and didn't want to spend any more than I had to. So I was looking at the least expensive porcelain boards I could find. A basic white board has an aluminum trim around it and usually offers a tray of some kind. But these boards usually look cheap and industrial -- not the sort of look I want for my home office. But *this* board is stunning. It has black edges on the top and bottom, with gracefully curved aluminum sides that really make it pop. The immediate impression of this board is that you paid big bucks to get a 'designer' board that would fit into any decor, including an upscale office. Yet it only costs a few bucks more than the cheapest porcelain board on Amazon. And that makes it an amazing bargain.

The board is really well made, with metal screws attaching all the components rather than the staples, nails, or other cheap fasteners you often see on white boards. I expect it to hold up well and to last approximately forever. It is made with a good grade of steel, and there is absolutely no 'give' or bounce when you write on it. And it's a joy to use: the ceramic surface allows the markers to just glide across it, and it erases completely with just a quick wipe of the eraser or towel.

Oh, and get this: every board has a unique serial number! To me, that suggests it was made by a manufacturer that cares enough about quality to be able to track each board and trace any problems back to their origin. I'm just making that up, of course; maybe they just put a serial number on it to impress me. If so, it worked '-).

Mounting white boards can be a pain, but I can't speak to how easy or hard this one is to mount because I'm not going to mount it to the wall in the usual manner. Instead, I bought two of them and will place them vertically in tracks that allow them to slide back and forth, with one slipping behind the other -- the way sliding glass doors do -- and I'm going to mount them on the front of my bookshelves (which are, of course, firmly anchored to the wall). That will give me the luxury of a six-foot board in a room that hasn't got anything like that kind of wall space. And just by sliding one board behind the other, I can shrink it down to a three-foot board, and I have easy access to my books. I mention this because you might find it a useful trick if your space is limited.

To sum up, this is one of the best & most beautiful white boards I have ever seen, much less owned. I recommend it most highly.
