I got this system to help me integrate my many phone gadgets and cellphones. I also wanted a few handsets so I wouldn't have to chase after a phone when a call comes in. I got more than I bargained for. This system will download the contact directories of bluetooth phones paired with it. The handset shows the status of the two bluetooth phones paired with it, so you know if you can dial out on them and if calls will come in from them. My wife and I walk in and out of our home and our phones automatically sync up with this system. The caller ID shows whatever info you may have in the contact directory, or whatever the phone gets. The handset controls take some getting used to. There are red and green buttons. The red button acts as you would expect, but the green button selects the wire line phone connection or generates a flash. To dial out on a bluetooth connected phone, you hit the blue button, select the bluetooth cell phone (it displays whatever name you gave your phone, or the model as default) using arrow keys, and then press select. You enter the number, and then select again to initiate the call. One you're used to this quirk, the rest is smooth sailing.
The audio quality on these phones is GREAT. And, there's an equalizer button that cycles through three equalization settings. Add to this, great speaker phone sound. There's plenty of volume, and when you speak, it gates back and forth nicely. There is a mute button that is well placed, so it's easy to use.
The range is great. I have no problems using a handset in a garage located about 300' from the home. The Bluetooth range is good also, a cellular phone becomes operational when it comes within 20' (line of sight) of the base station. If you want to add handsets, you can have up to 12 total.
The answering machine features can be fully controlled from any handset. You can enable/disable answering from the handset as well. The handset automatically switches to speaker phone mode when the answering machine is operated (you can switch off speakerphone mode if you wish, of course). In day to day use, there is no function that requires use of the base station, which can allow you to get creative about placement.
The handsets are long, slim, and although they can stand on their end, they are not very stable in that position. Placing them face down on a surface is inviting scratches. You have to be careful to place them on their backs when not in their bases. They fit in a pocket, but the odd shape seems as though it is inviting spills or drops. Care is required in handling them. Distinctive rings are provided so it's easy to tell the source of an incoming call.
I'm using this system in conjunction with a GigaSet One, which expands my system to a total of 5 cellular phones (i.e. it adds three more). The GigaSet One connects to the wire line jack on the AT&T base station. On the other side, a Skype box routes outbound line calls to Skype to save money on outbound calls. Skype lets you sync Caller ID to another number, so call recipients only notice the superior Skype audio. Note that the Bluetooth range on the GigaSet One is only about 1/3 the distance of the AT&T system. The AT&T handset's flash key can be used to select cell phones on the GigaSet One, while the AT&T system thinks they're all on the "home" line. Hopefully this gives you an idea of the flexibility possible with this system.
The user manual for this system is available online at [...] so you can check out all the features by downloading the manual in .PDF form.
The base station comes with a switching-type power adapter that is very efficient. The handset bases, however, come with transformer type adapters that will suck some power. I estimate total power consumption to be in the 25-40 watt range.
In summary, I have no negatives to report on this system other than what is mentioned above. This system does what I wanted it to and more. It works well, and has taken some of the stress out of my dealing with phones.
UPDATE a year and a half later: After a move and various other changes, this system is still performing great and showing no signs of wear. I'm using the Bluetooth feature less, because I'm using cellular phones less (as the world moves more toward texting and smartphone capability). I now use it mostly with the 2500 / RJ11 interface connected to my SIP (VOIP) interface box. The bluetooth feature of greatest use is becoming the contact directory download function; I wonder how long that will last, standards-wise. However, I mostly use Google Voice to initiate calls and ring them back to this system. I may buy another in order to get more remotes!
